How Do Drivers Earn Points in WRC?
The WRC Points System:

The World Rally Championship uses a points system to award drivers and teams based on their finishing position in each rally, but that’s not all. Drivers can gain points for the overall result, Sunday’s standings, and the Wolf Power Stage – though those Power Stage points don’t contribute to the manufacturers’ championship. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Overall Classification: Drivers receive: 25 points for 1st, 18 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, 12 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 8 for 6th, 6 for 7th, 4 for 8th, 2 for 9th, and 1 for 10th places.
  • Sunday Standings: Teams and drivers score additional points on Sunday: 7 for 1st, 5 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 for 5th places.
  • Wolf Power Stage: Drivers earn points in the standings here, too: 5 for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 for 5th result on the special stage.
Who Are The Main Contenders?
Best Of The Best:

At least five drivers have a legitimate shot at the championship title and are hungry. The Hyundai duo of Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak are both blindingly fast and have one title each under their belts: Neuville (2024) and Tänak (2019).

The Toyota trio, meanwhile, aren’t resting on any laurels. Elfyn Evans is arguably overdue for his first championship, while two-time WRC champion Kalle Rovanperä and eight-time champion Sébastien Ogier bring an experience that’s the envy of the entire paddock.

Still scratching your head about the points system? No problem! We’ve got you covered with our in-depth explanations, including WRC 2025 season’s team previews, and driver profiles.

You’ll notice that these standings are comprehensive, including both the top-tier WRC and the developmental WRC2 class. While all classes contribute to the overall rally excitement, the primary battle for the championship crown is waged in the WRC – where the top 10 reign supreme. Eagle-eyed fans will spot Toyota cars in both WRC and WRC2.

Who Are The Main Contenders?

The Teams At The Top:

In 2025, the fierce competition between Hyundai and Toyota continues to intensify. The Japanese manufacturer remains the undisputed leader, while the Korean squad is hot on their heels, desperate to reclaim the glory days of 2019 and 2020 when they won the championship. Will they succeed? Only time will tell, but they still have some serious firepower.

Where are the Citroen, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Peugeot?

Gone, but not forgotten?

Missing in action, it seems! In short, the WRC is a brutally expensive sport, and switching to hybrids has elevated it to the level of top-tier series like FIA Formula 1 and FIA WEC. That means the budget of any serious team must be as fat as a winning lottery ticket – or the personal bank account of a small country.

Even the plucky M-Sport Ford team survives thanks to the unwavering support of Malcolm Wilson (hence the name, ‘M-Sport’). What does that say about the others?

That said, you’ll still find Skoda and Citroen competing in WRC2, but the days of a manufacturer-giant slugfest like we saw in 2019 are, for now, a thing of the past. The good news? The hybrid era paused. Starting in 2026, the WRC has opened the doors for many other teams due to cost reductions (or at least, we hope so).

Want to clearly understand the difference between WRC2’s modified production cars and WRC’s snarling hybrids? Or to truly feel the actual price of a rally car (and understand why a used WRC2 car costs more than your house), check out our price-tag-filled types of rally cars in simple words.

But if you ever dreamed of getting behind the wheel of a rally car, find out where to start.

But here’s the thing: despite all the changes, the soul of rally racing remains alive and well in the 2025 WRC. We checked! The views are as stunning as ever, the destinations are diverse, and the pure racing drama is dialed to eleven. Who do you think will win the WRC championship this year? Chime in below!
